Top ten ways to have the best trees in your neighborhood:

1. Select the proper planting location for your landscape trees. Before planting a tree find out how large the tree is going to become as the tree matures. Avoid planting trees that will become too tall, such as Oak trees, under power or phone wires. Should the tree be planted in the full sun? Some trees, like Dogwood trees, usually prefer to be planted in partial shade.

2. Mulch around trees to keep grass away from the tree trunk. Mulching trees has many benefits, but avoid piling mulch against tree trunks. In general, the larger the mulch ring is around the tree trunk the better it is for the tree.

3. Have an arborist prune the tree to remove dead tree branches, crossing tree branches, and tree branches that are too low or too close to buildings. Having an arborist prune young trees will establish proper tree branch structure for healthy future growth.

4. Periodic tree fertilizing will make sure your trees have the necessary nutrients to remain healthy.

5. Protect the tree if construction is going to be done around the tree. Cutting of tree roots by trenching and soil compaction are two common causes of tree decline after construction.

6. Watch for damaging levels of insect pests on your trees. Tree spraying may be necessary every year or only occasionally, depending on tree species, tree location, environmental conditions and local insect pest populations.

7. Avoid tree topping. Tree topping has many negative effects on landscape trees. If a tree service suggests tree topping you should probably get a second opinion from a different arborist.

8. Water your landscape trees during times of drought. The best way to water landscape trees is to use a soaker hose or put a regular garden hose on a slow trickle and place is under the canopy of the tree.

9. Monitor your landscape trees for tree diseases. Whether or not your landscape trees will be infected by a tree disease is usually dependent on the particular tree species in your landscape. Some tree species are more prone to tree disease infection than others. An arborist can identify what tree disease is infecting landscape trees and the best way to control tree diseases.

10. Find a good tree service you can call when you have questions on how to care for your landscape trees. The advice of a professional arborist can be invaluable when determining how to properly care for landscape trees.
