ASH TREES REMOVED AT SILVER SPRINGS CAMPGROUND

Stow, OH

A Stow tree removal crew discovered Emerald Ash Borer insects while doing routine tree pruning and removal work at the Silver Springs campground. The discovery eventually led to the removal of more than 60 trees at the campground.

The invasive Emerald Ash Borer was first identified in Michigan in 2002 and made its first appearance in Ohio in 2003. The adult Emerald Ash Borer feeds on Ash leaves, but does not cause significant damage. The larva of the Emerald Ash Borer, however, feeds under the bark of Ash trees. The larval feeding disrupts the movement of water and nutrients within an Ash tree, eventually killing it.

How to know if your Ash tree is infested with Emerald Ash Borer

An infested Ash tree will display one or more of four main symptoms of Emerald Ash Borer:

  • The upper canopy of the Ash tree will start thinning out and the leaves will be smaller than in the lower canopy.
  • There may be splits in the bark on some branches. Emerald Ash Borer larval galleries may sometimes be seen under the split bark.
  • Sprouts will start growing from the base or lower trunk of an infested Ash tree.
  • D-shaped exit holes may be found on Ash tree trunks, branches, or on exposed roots.

After Dutch Elm Disease wiped out most native Elm trees in Stow the Ash tree became a favorite of city foresters because it was tolerant of urban conditions. City of Stow officials will need to determine a course of action to deal with the inevitable outbreak of Emerald Ash Borer-infested trees that will come.

Removing Ash trees is one way to cope with the Emerald Ash Borer. The other option is to save some Ash trees with Emerald Ash borer treatments. Arborists and tree services have found several techniques to successfully stop, or minimize, Emerald Ash Borer damage. Control of Emerald Ash Borer has been obtained with tree spraying, insecticide soil injections, or insecticide trunk injections.
