THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TREE DOCTOR AND A CERTIFIED ARBORIST

All tree doctors in Satsuma, Alabama are not ISA Certified Arborists. Anyone that performs tree trimming, tree removal, tree spraying, or tree fertilization could be considered a tree doctor. No formal training in tree care is necessary for someone in Satsuma to call themselves a tree doctor. The person just needs to buy the equipment necessary to perform tree care. It doesn’t require much for a person to buy the equipment necessary to perform tree care and then call themselves a tree doctor. For instance, someone could just buy a pickup truck and chainsaw to offer tree pruning and could rightfully call themselves a tree doctor. This is not to say that some arborists, or tree surgeons, that started their tree care service this way don’t care about trees. This is also not to say that a tree doctor that started a tree service in this manner doesn’t offer quality tree care services. Satsuma has many tree doctors, and tree services, that started just this way and do provide quality tree care. What’s important is that consumers of tree care services in Satsuma know there is a difference between a tree doctor and an ISA Certified Arborist.

How is a tree doctor different from an ISA Certified Arborist?

The difference is the testing, and commitment to ongoing education about the care of trees, a person must make to become and remain an ISA Certified Arborist. The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) developed the test that arborists, usually tree doctors, take to become ISA Certified Arborists. Passing the ISA Certified Arborist test does not mean a tree doctor remains an ISA Certified Arborist for life. The certification as an ISA Certified Arborist is legitimate for three years. The ISA Certified Arborist must either retake the arborist certification test when the ISA Certified Arborist designation expires or they must have collected 30 continuing education credits on tree care topics in the past three years. Continuing education credits are obtained by attending tree care seminars or taking, and passing, written tree care related quizzes which are graded by the ISA.

Many tree doctors in Satsuma that perform quality tree care have yet to make the commitment to become an ISA Certified Arborist. However, more and more of these tree doctors are realizing that as consumers of tree care services in Satsuma become educated about proper tree care it is worth the time and effort to become an ISA Certified Arborist. This notion is gradually increasing the quality of tree care provided by all the tree doctors and tree services in Satsuma.
