As the Emerald Ash Borer continues to spread across the nation Boxford, MA homeowners with Ash trees will need to decide if they are going to protect their Ash trees or remove them. For years the Ash tree was a popular replacement tree to Elm trees killed by Dutch Elm Disease. Now the Ash tree faces an even deadlier threat than the Elm trees in Boxford faced in the last century.

The Emerald Ash Borer attacks all native species of Ash, such as the White Ash or Green Ash. By the time exit holes from Emerald Ash Borer are seen on a tree it has already been feeding on the tree for at least a year. Depending on the health of the Ash tree, Emerald Ash Borer can kill an unprotected Ash tree in one to three years. There are only two options available to Ash tree owners - remove your Ash trees or treat the trees to control the Emerald Ash Borer.

How can you tell if your Ash tree has been infested with Emerald Ash Borer?

There are five symptoms that indicate the presence of Emerald Ash Borer:

  • Bark splitting - sometimes with borer galleries visible below the bark
  • D-shaped exit holes on the tree trunk, tree branches, or exposed roots
  • Sparse foliar growth in the upper canopy of the Ash tree
  • Shoots growing from the base of an Ash tree
  • Woodpeckers pulling off tree bark in search of borer larvae

Tree services and arborists in Boxford have multiple options available to protect Ash trees from the Emerald Ash Borer.  Arborists can control Emerald Ash Borer with tree spraying, insecticide soil injections, or tree trunk injections. The Emerald Ash Borer control treatment recommendation can vary depending on the health, size, and location of the Ash tree. Control treatments can be started after the Ash tree becomes infested if the damage is not too extensive.

In the long run, the cost to apply Emerald Ash Borer control treatments will be less than the cost to remove and replace a medium or large Ash tree. As long as the Ash tree is healthy when the treatments are started it should survive the initial wave of Emerald Ash Borer insects when they pass through Boxford.
