STATE ISSUES QUARANTINE TO STOP WALNUT TREE DISEASE

Chesterfield, VA

The discovery of a new tree disease has prompted the Virginia Department of Agriculture to issue a quarantine on Black Walnut trees in several counties. The quarantine includes walnut trees and tree parts such as walnut firewood, logs, walnut chips, stumps, and walnut tree branches.

The disease infecting Chesterfield County Black Walnut trees is called Thousands Cankers Disease. First discovered on Black Walnut trees in the western United States several years ago, the disease is spread by the tiny Walnut Twig Beetle. Infection occurs when the beetles tunnel under the bark of Black Walnut trees. The cankers caused by Thousand Cankers Disease disrupt the flow of water and nutrients within the Black Walnut trees causing the trees to die from the top down.

No fungicide treatments are available to prevent the tree-killing disease or stop it once a Black Walnut tree is infected. Tree spraying has not been shown to be effective in deterring Walnut Twig Beetle due to the length of time they are active during the growing season. To be effective, tree spraying would need to be done every month throughout the growing season and every part of the tree would need to be thoroughly covered.

If a tree service diagnosis indicates the presence of Thousand Cankers Disease the Black Walnut tree will eventually need to be removed. All the tree debris will also need to remain within the quarantined counties. Other Virginia counties included in the quarantine are Goochland, Henrico, Hanover, and Powhatan County and the city of Richmond.
