TREE ROOT PROBLEMS

Tree doctors are often called to inspect sick trees homeowners notice problems with the leaves on the tree. Homeowners often suspect a disease or insect pest when the real cause is some type of tree root problem. In many cases the tree root problem turns out to be a disturbed or damaged root system. Tree doctors are able to identify and help many root problems associated with declining trees.

Tree doctors often suggest tree fertilizing to help declining trees. Tree fertilizing is performed using a probe that allows the tree doctor to apply the nutrients near the tree roots and below the grass roots. Although some greening of the grass may occur where the probe is put into the ground most of the tree fertilizer is going to be absorbed by the tree roots.

Many tree doctors add supplements to their tree fertilizing treatments depending on the cause of the tree decline. Mycorrhizae fungi, for instance, are beneficial species fungi that attach to or surround the tree roots and increase the effective area of the trees root system. Kelp or seaweed extracts are also used to enhance a tree fertilizing by providing iron and other micronutrients. Rhizobacteria additives include several strains of beneficial soil bacteria that can augment a tree fertilizing treatment.

Sometimes improving the tree root zone means using mechanical treatments in addition to tree fertilizing. For instance, tree doctors can relieve soil compaction using soil augers, an air spade, or an air knife. Reducing soil compaction around the tree root zone improves the movement of air, water, and nutrients and makes it easier for absorbing roots to spread throughout the soil.

Tree doctors also use the air spade or air knife tool to perform root collar inspections on declining trees. During a root collar inspection a tree doctor may find that excess soil has been pushed up against the tree trunk. Pulling the excess soil away reduces the possibility of the development of tree trunk decay or root rot. The tree doctor will also look for girdling roots while doing a root collar inspection. Girdling roots are tree roots that grow around or against a tree trunk instead of growing away from the tree trunk.
